New ambitious targets at the global level on water, climate, packaging and agriculture


ATLANTA, GA, July 10, 2013 - The Coca-Cola Company and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), again together to improve the environmental management system of Coca-Cola, today announced important new targets with an expansion of the partnership to date realized.
These ambitious goals, alongside other commitments from Coca-Cola about the communities in which it operates and to their well-being, in this case revolve around the sustainable use of water, energy and packaging, as well as the sustainability supply of agricultural resources by 2020.
Strong  of the initial success of this nearly decade-long partnership, Coca-Cola and WWF have agreed to broaden their efforts towards new ambitious sustainability goals, which promote the importance of the preservation of nature in decision-making, thus inducing the most influential partners to act together to find solutions to global environmental challenges.

"In this world of ours, in which the exploitation of resources and the demand for food and water at the global level are continuing to increase, we are called to seek solutions that create benefits both to trade, as communities and nature. The collaboration with the WWF is a constant reminder for us to expand our sustainability programs; I would add that the skills of the WWF will be decisive for the achievement of our environmental goals, some of which have been established with the help of the association. "

In Sicily Coca-Cola’s commitment towards the environment has always been very strong. In particular, as regards the management of water resources, at Sibeg Plant in Catania, important results have been obtained in the management of wastewater treatment. With an investment of over one and a half million euro, was built a new water treatment plant that uses the most advanced technology available today (MBR), which guarantees an effluent discharge with characteristics well below the maximum accepted by current regulations. The water is so purified that exceeds the parameters required by the relevant legislation in force. In witness whereof, Sibeg implemented the project "Fish life": a tank fed by the waters coming from the exhaust of water treatment and where there are fish alive. In addition, in 2012, investments were made to recycle the water used for washing the filters in production facilities with a significant water savings.
In energy efficiency, in the years 2010 - 2012 Sibeg has reduced the energy consumption in the production process passing from 0.400 MJ/l to 0,388 MJ/l of energy per liter of beverage bottled saving, in this period, about 891 of GigaJ of energy per year.
From January 2012 thanks to the project of lightening of the PET bottles, Sibeg refrained from enter in Sicily a tremendous amount of PET, which although it is for recycling, involves costs for the collection and treatment prior to reuse as a byproduct. Sibeg estimates that this project allows a saving of PET released into the environment, of more than 300 tons per year.

Finally, thanks to production from renewable sources, saving of CO2 released into the environment, since March 2008 to date, was of 633.151 kg

On the basis of this renewed and even more extensive collaboration, Coca-Cola and WWF have called together new environmental sustainability goals for the Coca-Cola system, to be implemented by 2020, which relate both to the company, as its nearly 300 bottling partners in more than 200 countries. These objectives include:
1. Increasing the efficiency of water use by 25%. Coca-Cola will increment efficiency in the use of water per liter of product produced through operational improvements across the Coca-Cola system. This objective is complementary to the results achieved between 2004 and 2012.

2. The commitment to maintain healthy and resilient freshwater systems. The expansion of the partnership between Coca-Cola and WWF will increase the joint efforts of conservation of freshwater resources in 11 key regions on five continents, including river basins of the Amazon, the Koshi, the Mekong, the Rio Grande / Bravo , the Yangtze and the Zambezi, the reservoirs of the Great Barrier Reef and the Mesoamerican Reef, as well as the key regions of the Amur-Heilong, Atlantic Forest and the North American Great Plains.

3. Reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide "drinks turnkey" of 25%.
Coca-Cola is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions along the entire value chain, including the "carbon footprints" total resulting from manufacturing processes, packaging, delivery, refrigeration and retrieval of the ingredients.

4. Responsible for obtaining material for packaging PlantBottle ™. Coca-Cola will work with WWF to assess the social and environmental performance of biomaterials in view of their potential use for the PlantBottle ™ packaging. This will allow Coca-Cola to achieve by 2020 the target set by at least 30% of biomaterial in all its PET plastic bottles.

5. Sustainable sources for key agricultural ingredients. Coca-Cola is committed finding in a sustainable way its key ingredients, including cane and sugar beet, maize, tea, coffee, palm oil, soy, pulp and paper fiber , oranges. Coca-Cola has also established the Guidelines for Sustainable Agriculture that this collaboration will help to improve throughout the Coca-Cola system. In addition, Coca-Cola is also working on sustainable procurement of lemons, grapes, apples and mango.
In addition to the previous targets and those announced in collaboration with WWF, Coca-Cola has reaffirmed its environmental commitments concerning the replenishment of water reserves and recovery of packaging by 2020:

6. 100% reintegration of the water used. Coca-Cola reintroduce into the treated water in its production processes, to a level of quality that allows aquatic life, and reconstitute the water reserves used for its drinks continuing to support the communities involved in water projects, with partners in over 100 countries. To date, this action has compensated about 52% of the production volume through 468 projects.

7. Achievement of a recovery rate of 75% of bottles and cans in developed markets. Coca-Cola will work with the drinks industry and local organizations to determine the reference information and to increase the recovery and recycling activities in developed markets. Will also continue to reduce the amount of material and energy used in its packaging and use recycled and renewable materials.
The Coca-Cola Company and WWF work together since 2007 to preserve and protect resources of fresh water in the world, contributing at the same time to increase the efficiency of global operations of Coca-Cola. Now, this partnership has allowed the achievement of important goals, including: improving the ecological integrity of seven of the most important freshwater basins in five continents, and the consequent increase in the efficiency of water use by the Coca-Cola system by 20%, a reduction of 5 million metric tons of CO2 emissions in production processes, the promotion of more sustainable agricultural practices in the supply chain of The Coca-Cola Company.
